KayaObedience Basics (for dogs 5 months and up)

Our Obedience Basics class has started many hundreds of dogs on the path to being a well-trained canine companion. This 7-week course for teen and adult dog covers:

  • Your dog paying attention to you, even when there are distractions
  • Your dog learning to wait calmly for things he or she wants
  • Calm greetings when people approach (an alternative to boisterous jumping!)

  • Fundamentals of walking nicely on a leash
  • Coming when called - quickly and reliably
  • Wait and stay
  • Leave it
  • Positive socialization with other dogs and people
  • Games that make learning fun

Time: Once a week for 7 weeks. The first session, known as our “Training Toolkit Seminar”, is an orientation to canine behavior and training (this session lasts approximately 2½ hours and dogs stay home). Sessions 2-7 include the dogs, of course; these sessions last approximately one hour.

Obedience Short courses

Three sessions – three behaviors! These short courses provide great opportunities for both new and returning dog parents and their dogs to learn, refine, and/or refresh important life skills. Sessions are once a week for three consecutive weeks. Along with daily practice, these three session short courses will help you make significant progress with your dog's good manners.

Short Course A: Reliable Recall and More
This short course focuses on training a reliable recall (come when called), teaching your dog to "wait" (e.g. at doors) and improving your dog’s skills with "canine calisthenics" (sit, down, stand) in a variety of situations.

Short Course B: Leash Manners and More
This short course focuses on the skills needed to enjoy a pleasant on-leash walk with your dog, and the important behaviors "stay" and "leave it".

Along with our Orientation Session (required for those new to Canine Connection group classes), our two short courses cover most of the material that are taught during our seven-session Obedience Basics course.

Our two short courses can be taken concurrently (e.g. Short Course A on Monday and Short Course B on Friday), consecutively (e.g. Short Course A on Monday night followed by Short Course B on Monday night) or separately (e.g. Short Course A without taking Short Course B or vice versa).

NOTE: Dog parents who are new to Canine Connection group classes must first start with our Orientation Seminar (please call or email for scheduled times) then can join our short course program. Treibball

Treibball is a wonderful new dog sport that allows urban herding breeds (and non-herding breeds too!) to express that natural herding desire without the need for barnyard animals. Dogs learn how to control and herd balls across a large field and bring them right to your feet! This is a great activity for you and your dog to expend some pent up energy while having a blast! For those so inclined, competitions (depending on the venue and level ) vary from the relatively easy 3 balls on a flat field in 7 minutes to the very advanced 8 balls over a field full of obstacles in 10 minutes.

Treibball Foundations:
This class will teach you and your dog the vitally important foundation behaviors of stationing, beginning directional control, go ‘around' and ‘push'.

Dates/Registration:

Treibball Continued:
Treibball foundation graduates will further previously learned behaviors and will add the art of ball control to their skill set. You will be instructed in all the basic behaviors needed to participate in this fun new sport.

Rally-O

This dog sport encourages fun while performing obedience behaviors and maneuvers. Dog and handler teams traverse a course, usually maintaining an informal "heel" position, of 10 to 20 stations consisting of various obedience behaviors such as Halt-Sit-Stay, Right Turn, 270 degree Turn Left, Finish Left, and many more. Handlers (owners) are allowed and encouraged to communicate in a positive and encouraging way with their dog. This sport enhances teamwork between owner and dog, and reinforces solid leash skills. This course will introduce dog/handler teams to the APDT Level 1 behaviors/maneuvers, working up to completing courses of 10 to 15 stations. This course is suitable for continuing Canine Connection students.

Note: Rally O will be best enjoyed if your dog is calm around other dogs, does not pull on a leash when walking, and has achieved at least an intermediate level of obedience.

Time: Once a week for 6 weeks.

Cost: $120

  • Your schedule or situation prevents participation in our group classes.

Should ongoing private lessons be warranted, we’ll work with you and your dog as your Personal Canine Coach or you may choose to enroll your dog in our Jumpstart Pro Training Program.

Behavior Consultations
A private consultation with Dr. Sarah Richardson, Certified Pet Dog Trainer and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, will allow her to bring her many years of experience with dog behavior to your specific situation. This consultation is critical when dealing with aggression, anxiety, and other problem behaviors. During a behavior consultation, a prognosis for improving your dog’s behavior will be provided and first steps for a behavior modification program will be discussed and practiced. Behavior consultations are often followed with Private Lessons to help you better teach and live with your dog.

Behavior Consultation: $135 (approx. 1½ hour)
